Publishing your children’s book is a dream come-true for many rookie writers. However, there are a whole host of questions. Is my book suitable for publication? How do I publish a children’s book? Would a publishing house be interested in it? You may even wonder how to write a book.

How to publish a children’s book?

The road from idea to finished book is not all that difficult. A bit of self-denial, discipline, a writing bent, hundreds of books read, years of training, honing your craft, maybe some courses, knowledge of other books on the market — and in the end, it turns out that no one is interested in our book.

Is my book suitable for publication?

It’s possible that the book is uninteresting. Your writing can be graphomania. Your book does not fit the publisher’s profile, or the publishing house isn’t interested in a new collaboration as they have hundreds of other books scheduled in the queue. It’s also possible that your email got stuck somewhere unnoticed, as publishing houses receive many new proposals every day.

If our writing craft is exemplary, your book idea is great, and inspiring, and there hasn’t been anything like it before, then surely, your chances are good. Moreover, if your story gets good reviews not only from your circle of friends and acquaintances but also from professional editors and proofreaders who review our book, then your chances increase and quite likely your book will be published in the standard publishing model by a publishing house and you will have your coveted debut. However, what if this does not happen?

If you have skipped any stage, please remember: A book without editing, proofreading and reviews is unfinished. That is a grave mistake. You will benefit from a professional book review done by an experienced editor, who assess the workshop and the value of our work.

How do you publish a children’s book, and will the publishing house be interested?

You might have not sent your text to enough publishing houses, or that you do not remind yourself every few months. Sometimes, you have to knock several times before the door opens. Keep in mind that the publishing market is constantly evolving, and new publishers spring up. If you find them hard to find on a search engine, you can easily find them on social media like Instagram or Facebook. You should e-mail the book text should to publishers in Word or light PDF format. You can find the e-mail address on the publisher’s website. We have many great publishing houses dozens of others, both large and small.

Book publishing by the traditional publishing house method

If all means fail, and you feel frustrated and angry about the lack of response from the publishing house, then you had better give up further efforts. Of course, this is a joke. A debut is only for the patient, and it is not at all easier with subsequent books. You don’t have a well-known name, so it can be tough for you to stand out from the crowd. That’s normal. You buy books by well-known authors yourself. However, there are plenty of stories we know of where a book nobody wanted spawned series of great bestsellers. Every rose has its thorns, so you have to keep trying.

If you feel like handling the marketing, ordering of printing, and searching for an illustrator, you might be tempted to try self-publishing, which is also a great way to publish your own children’s book. However, you need to know that there are publishers who will try to trick you into printing your book themselves. I write print because these publishing houses are not publishers, but mere vanities who, apart from printing, do not do marketing, sales, distribution or even text evaluation. It’s a trap, scam and a cost stretch for the inexperienced author.

Self-publishing model of book release

Self-publishing has grown in popularity, and books published in this model are breaking through to press and television. What do you need to know about self-publishing? You are responsible for everything and, at the same time, bear the cost of printing, typesetting, editing, and illustration. Meanwhile, all profits from sales go to you. That is as secure a publishing model as the traditional publishing house, but requires not only a well-written book that has unique values and stands out from the rest, but also funds, planning, maintaining a website and engaging in social media. Not everyone is ready to make so many sacrifices. Most authors enjoy writing but don’t feel like outsourcing the illustration or typesetting of a book and taking care of promotion or distribution. Those authors are left trying to make a name for themselves in publishing. However, self-publishing can be good alternative for the persistent.

In order to self-publish, the text needs to be proofread and edited. Also, you need to know what size suitable for your book and whether you plan to publish it in paperback, hardcover or cardboard. I can help you with this, or if you want, check what the most popular book size are. Firstly, you find an illustrator for your children’s books and commission illustrations, a book cover and a typesetting service. Whenever looking for an illustrator, consider whether the style they create is suitable for your book or not. It is useful to make sure that the terms of cooperation are clearly-defined at the very beginning. Then you need to look for a printing company to make an appointment for printing and obtain a print specification and the cover size. Next, create a website, instagram profile and an online shop. Then send the finished and illustrated book to the printing house. You can outsource the distribution and promote it yourself. That is quite a lot.

Publishing print-on-demand (POD) Amazon KDP, Ingram Spark

Two pivotal POD platforms for print books are KDP Print and IngramSpark. Amazon’s service, KDP Print (KDPP), allows authors to produce physical copies of their books with ease, and leverage access to the Amazon store, the largest book retailer globally. IngramSpark (IS), developed specifically for indie authors by IngramContent, offers comprehensive POD services with extensive global distribution capabilities and access to bookstores and libraries.

An interesting alternative to Ingram Spark is Book Baby

Most indie authors make most of their money from ebooks and digital audiobooks. So, it’s important to keep this in mind for your book to be successful. You’ll need to carefully research a formatter who can create all of these formats for you.

As you can see, publishing your own children’s book involves a whole range of activities and only two options. One is time-consuming due to the number of e-mails sent to the publisher and waiting for a response. The other related to your commitment and the amount of work you do beyond writing the book.

If you are looking for illustrations for your book, you can visit my website or hundreds of others on Behance, Instagram or Facebook. On top of that, I do the typesetting, page layout, book cover and creating marketing materials while I work on the illustrations, including animations. The rest will be handled by other specialists who will help you publish your book. These include editors who will proofread the text and correct any errors, and formatters who will prepare the book for printing in various formats (Amazon KDP, Ingram Spark, and ebooks).
